Chen Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Lack (qiàn) Page 566, Entry 01 Pronounced yu. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to a calm and settled breath. Scholar Xu states that it signifies a slow and peaceful breath. Colloquially, it is used as a final particle in speech. From the Mingtang Poem by Ban Gu: How magnificent and bright, truly cherishing much good fortune. From the Rhapsody on Ascending the Tower (Denglou Fu) by Wang Can: In the past, when Confucius was in Chen, he uttered a sigh of returning. In classical texts, it is commonly written in the variant form yu. In the Commentary on the Book of Rites (Liji), the chapter on the Meaning of Sacrifices (Jiyi) states that the term yu is an expression that does not fix a definitive meaning. Also pronounced yu. Also pronounced yu. The meaning is the same. According to the Zhengzitong dictionary, the character does not actually have the pronunciations of yu and yu. The Zihui dictionary suggests other pronunciations for yu and yu, but the meanings remain the same. It is not realized that yu is the original pronunciation of yu, as in the word for bestow or give. The pronunciation yu is a derived sound of yu, as in the phrase I shall participate in hearing it from the Analects of Confucius (Lunyu). The character yu, when shifted to a level tone, is borrowed as yu; the meanings are interchangeable. However, if one confuses the upper and departing tones with the original yu, it becomes difficult to understand. This observation is indeed correct, but because various rhyme books have followed this tradition for a long time, both pronunciations are preserved. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is sometimes written in the variant form yu.
