Chen Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Lack (qiàn) Yu. Kangxi strokes: 18. Page 566, Entry 08. Identical to the character (yú). (yú) Pronounced yu (rising tone). Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters): The breath of peace. Xu states: Breath that is slow and peaceful. Commonly used as a particle at the end of a sentence. Ban Gu, Mingtang Poetry (Ode to the Bright Hall): Ah, how bright and glorious, truly harboring much good fortune. Wang Can, Denglou Fu (Rhapsody on Ascending the Tower): Formerly, when Confucius was in Chen, he expressed a sigh of wanting to return. In the classics and commentaries, it is commonly written as (yǔ). Book of Rites (Liji), Commentary on the Meaning of Sacrifices: The particle (yǔ) is an expression of non-certainty. Also pronounced yu (rising tone). Also pronounced yu (falling-rising tone). The meaning is the same. Zhengzitong (Comprehensive Dictionary): (yú) does not possess the pronunciations (yǔ) or (yù). Although the Dictionary of Characters (Zihui) records the pronunciations (yǔ) and (yù) with the same meaning, it fails to recognize that (yǔ) is the root pronunciation of the character (yǔ), as in the verb to give or bestow. (yù) is a derivative sound of (yǔ), as found in the Analects of Confucius: shall I participate in it? When the character (yǔ) is leveled, it is borrowed as (yú); the meaning is compatible. However, if one confuses the level, rising, and departing tones of (yǔ), it becomes difficult to understand. This statement is indeed correct, but because dictionaries have followed these conventions for a long time, both are preserved. Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters): Sometimes written in a variant form (yú).
