According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the mouse-catalpa tree. According to the Book of Odes (Shijing), Xiao Ya section, there are yu trees on the northern mountains. According to the Commentary on Grasses and Trees (Caomu Shu), the tree leaves and wood grain resemble the catalpa; it is a variety of mountain catalpa. It is also known as the bitter catalpa. When damp, it is brittle; when dry, it is hard. According to the Expanded Rhymes (Guangyun), the mouse-catalpa resembles the mountain catalpa but is black. Also pronounced yu. The meaning is the same.
