Pronounced yu.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means mother. As noted in the Biography of Yan Yannian in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Yan Yannian and his four brothers were all high-ranking officials; their mother was titled the Ten-Thousand Shi Matriarch.
Also pronounced yu. As noted in the Record of Music (Yueji) in the Book of Rites (Liji), to warm and nourish all things. The commentary states that heaven warms them with energy, and earth nourishes them with form. It also refers to an old woman.
Also pronounced kou. Used in a personal name; there was a figure named Xia Youfu. Commonly written as a variant form (kou).
Also the name of a mountain. According to the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), there is Mount You, where the upper reaches abound in beautiful jade and the lower reaches abound in gold.
Also pronounced gou. The meaning is the same.
