Xu Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Mound (fù) 陜; Kangxi radical strokes: 15; Page 1351 Ancient script. Tang Rhyme (Tángyùn), reading Hóu jiā qiē; Jiyun (Jíyùn) and Yunhui (Yùnhuì), reading Xiá jiā qiē; Zhengyun (Zhèngyùn), reading Hú jiā qiē. Pronounced qià. Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì) says: Narrow. A note by Xu Xuan states: Nowadays, people commonly write it with the mountain radical as 峽, which is incorrect. Yupian (Yùpiān) says: Not wide. Also written as 狭. Erya (Ěryǎ), Explanation of Palaces: A narrow and long winding path is called lóu. Book of Han (Hàn Shū), Treatise on Suburban Sacrifices: Traveling in valleys, constricted and narrow for nearly a hundred li. Sima Xiangru, in his Book of Fengshan Sacrifices: Tracing narrow valleys and humble plains, far and wide, praising the foam. Ode to the Imperial Hunting Park (Shànglín Fù): Rushing to the entrance of the narrow passage. Also Xún shǎn, a place name. Records of the Grand Historian (Shǐjì), Account of Nanyue: The General of the Towered Ships led elite troops, first capturing Xún shǎn and breaking through Shímén. Note: Xún shǎn is three hundred li west of Shǐxīng. Also, Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) says it is the same as 陿. In Records of the Grand Historian, it is Xún shǎn; in the Book of Han, it is written as Xún xiá. Also, Jiyun (Jíyùn) lists another reading, Qì qià qiē, pronounced jiá. The meaning is the same. Also, Jiyun lists it as a place name, divided by the Duke of Zhou and Duke of Shao. However, the actual place name is Shǎn. The character used for this place name, Shǎn, is pronounced shǎn, having only a rising tone and no entering tone. Although the character 陜 has the two pronunciations qià and jiá, it does not refer to the place name Shǎn. Jiyun's note is erroneous. Pianhai (Piānhǎi) says: Commonly written as 陕.
