Pronounced líng. A river name. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), the water originates in Danyang Wanling and flows northwest into the Yangtze River. Also, there is the Ling River in the Guanzhong region. According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijingzhu), the Ling River originates at Fuzhi Mountain. Also, there is a Ling River in Lingling. According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijingzhu), the Ling River flows out from the southern side of Mount Jiuyi and flows north through Lingdao County. Also, there is a Ling River in Qujiang County, Guiyang. According to the Commentary on the Water Classic (Shuijingzhu), the Ling River originates at Lingjun Mountain.
Also, Qingling is a river name. According to Zhang Heng's Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu), the plowman spreads light in the abyss of Qingling. The commentary notes it is located on Mount Xi'e, west of Nanyang. Also, the waters of the Three Rivers are called the Three Lings.
Also, lingling describes the sound of flowing water. According to the Ancient Music Bureau (Gu Yuefu), the mountain drips, how lingling. Also, it describes the sound of the wind. According to Song Yu's Rhapsody on the Wind (Feng Fu), clear and lingling, curing illness and dispelling drunkenness. According to the Zhuangzi, riding the wind and traveling, ling-like and at ease.
Also, sounds that are full and overflowing are called lingling. According to Lu Ji's Rhapsody on Literature (Wen Fu), the sounds are lingling and fill the ears.
Also, a ling wind is a mild breeze, a wind that causes grain to grow. According to the Master Lu's Spring and Autumn Annals (Lüshi Chunqiu), the master is for the ling wind.

Also, Miling was a county name during the Han dynasty, belonging to Jiaozhi Commandery. Lingdao was also a Han dynasty county name, belonging to Lingling Commandery.
Also, it is interchangeable with ling (musician/actor). According to the Zuo Commentary (Zuo Zhuan), the Duke of Jin met Zhongyi and asked about his lineage; he replied, I am a ling person. The orthodox commentary states that the Ling family served as music officials for generations and were skilled in this craft, hence later generations referred to music officials as ling officials.
