According to the Explanations of Characters and Phrases (Shuowen Jiezi), in the eastern Qi region, thin and delicate cloth is called ling. According to the Phonetic Explanation of Classics (Shiwen), ling means to soar, as its texture resembles the patterns found in ice crystals. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is a silk fabric with patterns. According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), ling and wan are both types of fine silk. Furthermore, in the Rhapsody on the Lingguang Hall (Luolingguangdian Fu) by Wang Yanshou, it is written: Raised and layered like dragon scales. The commentary notes that this refers to an uneven and bumpy appearance.
