According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the name of a plant. In the Rhapsody of Sir Fantasy (Zixu Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned that in damp areas, plants such as zanglang, reeds, and rushes grow. The commentary by Guo notes that zanglang is a plant name and can be used as fodder for cattle and horses.
Also pronounced in the falling tone.
Regarding the term langdang: According to the Materia Medica (Bencao), it is also known as tianxianzi (heavenly immortal seed) and xingtang. Consuming its seeds causes a person to become wild and unrestrained, hence the name. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Cang Gong, it mentions being administered langdang.
