In the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the halls on the east and west sides. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), the term refers to the area under a roofed corridor. According to the Extended Rhymes (Guangyun), it refers to the outer rooms below a main palace hall. In the Biography of Dou Ying from the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), it is recorded: "Bestowed gold under the corridors." The commentary by Yan Shigu states: The term refers to the encircling rooms situated below a hall. In the Admonitions of the Guanglu Xun by Yang Xiong, it is written: "The halls and gateways of the corridor are limited by restricted boundaries."
It is also commonly written as a variant form (lang). In the Biography of Dong Zhongshu from the History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), it is recorded: "I have heard that in the time of Tang and Yu, they traveled upon the rocky corridors." The commentary by Jin Zhuo states: This refers to the covered walkways along the side of a hall. Rocky corridor refers to a steep or imposing corridor. In the Biography of Sima Xiangru, it is recorded: "Your Majesty builds corridor platforms, fearing they are not high enough." The commentary by Yan Shigu states: This refers to the encircling side rooms below a hall.
