Ancient text records: Guangyun, Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengyun all provide the pronunciation as lu (falling tone), sounding the same as lu (prosperity). Shiming explains: The foot of a mountain is called lu. Lu means land. It refers to water flowing along the land, causing the soil to become dry. Zhouli, Diguan, Linheng records: In charge of patrolling the prohibitions regarding mountains, forests, and mountain foothills, and carrying out duties equitably. The annotation explains: Measuring the size of mountains, forests, and foothills, as well as the plants growing there; bamboo and trees growing on level ground are called lin, and those at the foot of a mountain are called lu. Shijing, Daya contains the verse: Look at the foothills of the Han mountain. The commentary explains: Han is the name of a mountain. Lu is the foot of the mountain. Additionally, Shuowen Jiezi explains: Lu is the official who guards the mountains and forests. It also carries the meaning of recording or managing. Shangshu, Shundian records: Yao had Shun enter the great lu (also interpreted as managing general affairs), even during storms and heavy rain, he did not lose his way. The commentary explains: He was placed in charge of numerous governmental affairs. The annotation also refers to this as the foot of a mountain. It is also interchangeable with the character lu (deer). Chunqiu, Xigong Year 14 records: Shalu collapsed. Guliang Zhuan explains: A forest connecting to a mountain is called lu. Also, with rhyming pronunciation of li (falling tone), read as li. Yilin records: Possessing literary virtue, ascending to the great lu, the gates of the four directions are solemn and respectful, ascending the throne to receive great fortune. The character fu (fortune) is pronounced the same as bi (approaching).
Textual research: Zhouli, Diguan, Linheng records: In charge of patrolling the prohibitions of lu. In accordance with the original text, the character lin is added before the character lu.
