Ancient form is ji. According to Tang Rhymes (Tangyun) and Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is pronounced ji (falling tone). According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a horse that can travel one thousand li, one that was appraised by Sun Yang. Xu says that Sun Yang is Bo Le. As written in Seven Orders (Qi ming) by Zhang Xie: The heavenly ji holds the spirit of the deep abyss and receives the essence of the bright moon. It is also the name of a county. Tianshui has a Ji County. It also refers to the white ji, a name for a fish. According to Notes on the Past and Present (Gujin zhu), the people of Yanzhou call the white carp the white ji. According to Collection of Characters (Yupian), citing the Records of Emperor Mu (Mu tianzi zhuan), it is written as a variant form. According to Collection of Brushes (Bicong), it is also written as a variant form. The character is composed of the radical for reeds and the radical for lightning, written with the radical for lightning below the radical for reeds.
