Guangyun (broad rhymes of the broad rhyme book), Jiyun (general rhyme book), Yunhui (collection of rhymes), and Zhengyun (correct rhymes) all provide the reading jie, with a pronunciation identical to the word jie (section).
Shuowen (explication of graphs) defines this as the corner of a mountain, or the protruding part of a high mountain. The character is composed of the radical for mountain and the character for jie (joint). Xu Shen notes that the high place at the corner of a mountain is called jie.
In the Rhapsody on the Capital of Wu (Wudu Fu) by Zuo Si, it describes climbing along the winding parts of the mountain peaks. The commentary states that places where the mountain terrain bends are called jie.
Additionally, Jiyun notes this is interchangeable with the character for section (jie). In the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the Xiao Ya section, it refers to the towering South Mountain. Zhengzitong (standard character directory) notes that some people write it in a variant form, but this is incorrect.
