According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to essence-light, meaning brilliant radiance. The character is formed by three sun characters. In a poem by Song Zhiwen, there is the line, In the eighth month, the cool wind makes the weather clear and bright. There is also the term jingjing, which describes the appearance of brightness. Ouyang Zhan in Autumn Moon Rhapsody (Qiuyue Fu) writes, Bright and full. There is also the line from a poem by Fang Yue, The morning river trees are bright and glistening. The Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) records that it is sometimes written in a variant form (sheng). General Refinements (Tongya) points out that in ancient times, the characters for essence (jing) and brilliance (jing) were interchangeable. In the Forest of Changes (Yilin), the phrase, The solar brilliance lies hidden, refers to solar essence. Reading Thoroughly (Dushu Tong) mentions that water essence (shui jing) refers to crystal.
