Shen Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Grass (cǎo) Jing Kangxi stroke count: 14 Page 1030, Entry 11 In ancient texts: The Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) states the pronunciation is jing. The Rhyme Compilation (Jiyun), Rhyme Gathering (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is jing. It is pronounced like jing. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) explains it as a type of tree found in the Chu region. The Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing) records that many jing and qi trees grow at the foot of Hushan Mountain. The Materia Medica (Bencao) mentions the mu-jing plant. Note: Ancient walking sticks were often made of jing wood, hence the character is formed with the component for punishment (xing); because it grows in clusters that are sparse, it is also called chu. The Jing-Chu region derives its name from the abundance of this plant. Also refers to the name of a province. The Book of Documents (Shangshu), section Tribute of Yu (Yugong), records that the area from Jingshan Mountain to Hengyang is Jing Province. Also refers to a mountain name. The Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Record of Commanderies and States (Junguo Zhi), records that there is a Jingshan Mountain in the territory of the Linju Marquis of Nanjun Commandery. Note: This is the place where Bian He discovered a jade block. Also a surname. The Comprehensive Record of Clans (Tongzhi Shizu Lue) records that there was Jing Ke in the Yan State; this surname traces its ancestral home to Guangling. Also, the Rhyme Supplement (Yunbu) states the pronunciation is jiang. The Biographies of Exemplary Women (Lienü Zhuan) records: Entrusting Zhou Li to another to avoid disaster; when Bo Zong encountered misfortune, Zhou Li fled to the Jing region. Supplement: The Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) records: This is the same as the character jing. The character form for jing is derived from the component qian.
