Bamboo Manual (Zhupu): The bamboo nodes of the huang bamboo are dense and hard; the bamboo trunk is round and the texture is solid; the bamboo skin is white like frost powder. Large ones are suitable for shipbuilding, and small ones can be made into flutes. Shoot Manual (Sunpu): The shoots of the huang bamboo emerge in the eighth month; the shoot skin is blackish-purple and the core is full. It also refers to a bamboo grove. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Yue Yi: Plants grown at Jiqiu were transplanted into the bamboo groves of the Wen River. Commentary: Xu Guang says: Fields where long bamboo grows are called huang. Songs of the South (Chuci), Nine Songs: I dwell in the deep bamboo grove and never see the sky. Commentary: Huang refers to a bamboo thicket.
