According to the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a type of grasshopper. Lu Dian states that the character for locust contains the element for sovereign, because its head, abdomen, and back all bear markings resembling the character for king.

History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), Annals of Emperor Wen: Due to drought, a locust plague occurred. The commentary by Yan Shigu notes that a locust is the same as a grasshopper, which devours grain crops and causes disaster; it is commonly called a winnowing-bell insect.
