History of the Former Han Dynasty (Qian Hanshu): Attendants spread rumors, causing discord between superiors and subordinates, spying on and monitoring one another.
Also, New Book of Tang (Tangshu): Li Chulin harbored disloyal intentions, spying and waiting for an opportunity.
Also interchangeable with si (to manage or oversee).
