As stated in the Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters (Shuowen), it refers to a ceremonial jade, a type of circular jade artifact. In the Jade Compendium (Yupian), it is described as a ceremonial jade that is circular in shape to symbolize heaven. In the Comprehensive Discussions in the White Tiger Hall (Baihu tong), the outer rim of the jade disk symbolizes heaven, while the inner square represents the earth. Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: As a gui tablet, as a jade disk. In the Erya, Explaining Objects (Erya, Shiqi), a jade artifact where the width of the edge is greater than the diameter of the central hole is called a bi. The commentary notes that the character rou refers to the edge of the jade, and the character hao refers to the central hole. It also refers to the name of a star mansion. In the commentary to the Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei, titled Ding zhi fang zhong, it is explained that when the Bi constellation is in the south, it is located to the east of the residence, which is why it is called the Eastern Wall.
