In the Explanation of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means to attach or increase. Xu states: it is like attaching extra pieces to clothing.
Also, according to the Collection of Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Rhyme Compilation (Yunhui), it means to give or to attach.
In the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it means to supplement. According to the Discourses of the States (Jin Yu): To organize and manage the state, to assist the former ruler and achieve hegemony.
Also, pronounced pi. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it refers to a type of ceremonial crown. In the Book of Rites (Liji), Jade Digest (Yuzao): The feudal lords wear plain robes for sacrifices and ceremonial crowns for court audiences.
