According to Jiyun (Jíyùn), Yunhui (Yùnhuì), and Zhengqun (Zhèngqún), the character is pronounced zǐ via Zǔsì cut. It means "to be able to, to shoulder responsibility." For example, in the Book of Odes (Shijing) (Zhou Song): "Assisting in their duties." Also, according to Guangyun (Guǎngyùn), the character is pronounced zī via Zīzhī cut, with the same meaning.
