Pronounced jian (falling tone).
In the Explanation of Characters (Shuowen), it is originally written as the character jian. See the detailed note under the character jian. It is also used interchangeably with jian. As cited in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Great Odes: Famine and dearth arrive repeatedly.
Also, pronounced cun (level tone). It is the same as the character cun. Yan is the name of a county located in Jianwei. It is sometimes written with the water radical as jian.
