Ancient script. Pronounced zhi (falling tone).
As defined in the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen): A drinking vessel made of horn used in rural drinking ceremonies. The Book of Rites (Liji) states: One person washes and raises the vessel, which holds four sheng.
The Jade Chapters (Yupian) states: A drinking vessel.
The Revised Rhymes (Zengyun) states: When full it is called a cup, when empty it is called a zhi.
The Book of Rites, Record of Rites (Liji, Liqi) states: Those of higher status raise the zhi. The commentary states: Three sheng is called a zhi. Zhi means to adapt; one must drink according to one's own capacity.
Also, the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) states: A vessel used to impose a penalty in drinking games.
Also, pronounced zhi (even tone). The meaning is the same.
The Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen) notes it is also written in a variant form (zhi).
