In Tangyun, it is pronounced duohan qie. In Jiyun and Yunhui, it is also pronounced duohan qie, with the sound dan. Handan is an ancient county name.
In Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan), Duke Ding, Year 10, "Marquis Wei attacked Handan Wu at Hanshi." The note says: "Handan is Guangping County."
In History of the Former Han (Qian Hanshu), Treatise on Geography, "Handan belonged to the State of Zhao." The note explains: "Han is a mountain name. Dan means 'to end' or 'to exhaust.' The Han mountain range ends here. The character for 'city walls' includes the radical for 'city' (邑 yì), so the radical 邑 (yì) was added to form the character dan."
Also, in Jiyun, it is pronounced danghe qie, with the sound duo. It was the name of a marquisate during the Han dynasty.
In Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Table of Meritorious Officials, Zhongyuan Year 1, "Zhou Yin was enfeoffed as Marquis Dan."

In a Yuefu poem by Wu Maiyuan, "People and horses are the color of wind and dust, knowing they return from the border beyond the river. At that time, I had a companion, together we journeyed as officials to Handan." The character 還 (huan) here is pronounced xuan.
