The Classic of Difficult Issues (Nanjing) by Qin Yueren records that when the Governor Vessel (dumai) becomes ill, the symptoms include stiffness of the spine and fainting. The Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet (Jinkui yaolue) by Zhang Zhongjing states: stiffening of the spine is a general term for five types of zhi diseases, with symptoms including a sudden inability to open the mouth, arching of the back, and convulsions of the hands and feet.
