Shuowen Jiezi (Dictionary of Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters): A bird that strikes and kills.
Yupian (Jade Chapters): A fierce bird.
Qu Yuan, Li Sao (Encountering Sorrow): Fierce birds do not flock, this has been true since the past.
Wang Yi Commentary: Zhi means to grasp. It refers to those like eagles and hawks, which are able to grasp and subdue other birds.
History of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu), Biography of Du Shi: Tang and Wu were skilled at leading the masses, therefore they did not have armies of aggressive violence.
Commentary: Zhi means to strike. Also, all birds that are brave and beasts that are fierce are called zhi.
Book of Rites (Liji), Monthly Ordinances (Yueling): Hawks and falcons strike quickly.
Commentary: Zhi refers to a swift and severe spirit.
