Pronounced zhi. The reading is the same as zhi. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), zhi means to store items under a roof. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), zhi means to reserve or to prepare. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), in the section Zhou Eulogies (Zhou Song), it says: Command my many farmers to prepare their shovels and hoes. It is also often used interchangeably with zhi. In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), in the section Oath of Fei (Fei Shi), it says: Prepare your dry rations. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is sometimes written as a variant form (zhi). According to the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun), it is also written in a variant form.
