Pronounced yao (level tone). The appearance of a pleasant and agreeable complexion. Analects (Lunyu): Appearance is pleasant and agreeable. Also, the appearance of lush vegetation. Book of Documents (Shujing), Tribute of Yu (Yugong): Its grass is lush. Also, the appearance of being young and beautiful. Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Nan: The peach tree is young and beautiful. Also, disaster. Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes of the Kingdom (Xiaoya): Disaster is struck. Also, Hong Yao, a person's name. One of the four virtuous ministers of King Wen of Zhou, and one of the ten capable statesmen of King Wu of Zhou. Also, Bai Yao, the name of a horse, seen in Liezi.
Pronounced ao (rising tone). Underage. Book of Rites (Liji), Monthly Ordinances (Yueling): In the first month of spring, do not kill the unborn or the young. Royal Regulations (Wangzhi): Do not kill the unborn, do not kill the young. Commentary: The unborn is called tai, the newly born is called yao.
Pronounced yao (rising tone). Same as the previous entry. Explaining Texts and Writing Compounds (Shuowen): To curve. Xu says: To curve the head and neck. Another opinion says it means to die prematurely. Broadly Refined (Boya): Not being able to enjoy the full span of life is called yao.
Pronounced wo (entering tone). Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): The state of Xuanyuan has the wilderness of Zhuyao.
Pronounced wai (level tone). Bai Juyi poem: Su Xiaoxiao of Qiantang, people say she is the most crooked. Author's note: Yao is pronounced wai, included in the nine jia rhyme group.
Pronounced you (rising tone). Han Yu, Epitaph for Madame Wei: Returning, she met her goodness, husband and wife. Alone not given years, but ended in premature death. Fu is pronounced fou. Ouyang Xiu, Epitaph for Cai Junshan: If Tuizhi has words, who can say death is premature? The son tombs my inscription, its transmission is not immortal. Alternatively written as ao and fa.
Textual research: Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes of the Kingdom (Xiaoya): Disaster is struck. Carefully corrected according to the original text, changing tian to yao.
