According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), 枖 describes trees that are slightly flourishing.
As stated in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Zhou Nan section: The peach tree is flourishing. In the original text of the Book of Odes, this character is written as a variant form (yao). Xu Shen states: It refers to plants that have just sprouted and grow quickly before they have fully gained the strength of the soil.
In the Book of Documents (Shangshu), Tribute of Yu (Yu Gong) section: Its grasses are tender. The commentary states: Things that grow quickly and surpass others, therefore those that are short and broken are also called (yao).
Also, according to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced yao. It is the name of a tree.
According to the Classified Chapters (Leipian), pronounced yao. It describes a tree with flourishing blossoms. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is used interchangeably with the variant form (yao). Sometimes also written in a variant form.
