Jiyun (Collection of Rhymes) states that the ancient form of the character for high mountain (yue) is written as yue.
Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters) states that the character for high mountain (yue) is written in the ancient seal script as [omitted].
Liushu Zheng'e (Rectification of the Six Writings) states that the character form is composed of hill (qiu) and mountain (shan), and is a pictographic character. The forms yue and yue are used interchangeably in classical texts.
Note: Zihui (Collection of Characters) cites ancient texts to distinguish the two as separate characters; however, this entry follows the Zhengzitong (Proper Character Guide) in categorizing it under the commentary for the character for high mountain (yue) found later in this dictionary.
It is also used as a surname. For example, Yue Fei of the Song dynasty and Yue Zheng of the Ming dynasty.
