Pronounced xia (entering tone).
General Dictionary of Pronunciation (Guangyun): Wu Gorge, a mountain name. It is located at the border of Shu and Chu; there are three gorges within the mountains. Zuo Si, Rhapsody on the Capital of Shu (Shudu Fu): Passing through the high and dangerous reaches of the three gorges. Commentary: The Three Gorges are in Badong, Yong'an County, referring to Xiling Gorge, Guixiang Gorge, and Wu Gorge. Jingzhou Record (Jingzhouji) by Sheng Hongzhi: Within the seven hundred miles of the Three Gorges, the mountains on both banks connect without interruption; layer upon layer of cliffs and peaks obscure the sky and the sun. Unless it is high noon, the sun and moon cannot be seen.
Also, a prefecture name. During the Qin dynasty, the general Bai Qi attacked the State of Chu and burned Yiling, which is this place. Emperor Wu of Wei established Linjiang Commandery here. During the Later Wei, it was Tuo Prefecture, taking the meaning of opening up. The Zhou dynasty, because it was located at the exit of the Three Gorges, named it Xia Prefecture.
