Pronounced xiàn. An insect name. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the hanging woman insect. See the entry for the entry for the spoon worm (yì) for details.
Also pronounced xián. The meaning is the same.
Also pronounced xiǎn. According to the Classified Dictionary (Leipian), it refers to a small clam.
According to the Book of Sui (Suishu), in the Biography of Liu Zhen, it is noted that he enjoyed eating these clams. Because his father's personal name was Xian, he referred to the clam as a flat snail.
Also the name of a lake. According to the Annotations to the Annals of the Xia Dynasty in the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), among the Three Rivers, one river flows southeast for seventy li starting from Lake Xian, known as the Upper River. Sometimes written in a variant form.
Textual research: The original text of the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) stated it was the spoon worm (yì) woman. Note: the original text has been corrected from the spoon worm (yì) to the hanging woman (yì).
