Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collection Rhyme (Jiyun), Rhyme Gathering (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is tu.
Yu Pian states: Taotu is the name of a fine horse. It is also the name of a beast. Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanjaijing) states: In the Northern Sea there is a beast shaped like a horse, named taotu, which is blue-green in color.
Book of Han (Qianhan): Officials' Records mentions that a superintendent of taotu was established.
It is also a country name. Yang Xiong in Dissuading the Ridicule (Jiechao) writes: Today in the great Han dynasty, to the left lies the East Sea, to the right is Qusou, to the front is Panyu, and to the rear is Taotu. The commentary notes: Taotu horses originate from the Northern Sea. Taotu is the name of a northern country that produces horses, hence the country is named after the horse.
Er Ya: Interpretations of Domestic Animals commentary states: The kuitaotu is also like a horse but has the hooves of an ox.
Also a personal name; in the Later Han dynasty there was Liu Taotu.
