According to the Yupian (Yùpiān), the character 冟 is pronounced shì. It refers to cooked rice of appropriate consistency, neither too hard nor too soft. This character is now commonly written as the character pronounced shì. Also, according to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì), it refers to cooked rice whose consistency is not appropriate, being either too hard or too soft. The Shiming (Shìmíng) states that 冟 means 'inappropriate' or 'unsuitable'.
