You Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Carriage (chē) Entry: Qi Kangxi stroke count: 11 Page 1240, Entry 23 Pronounced qi. According to the Shuo Wen Jiezi (Shuo Wen): The end of a long wheel hub. Book of Odes (Shijing), Minor Odes: Bound with qi and inlaid with cross-patterns on the yoke. Commentary: To bind, as in binding with leather straps around the wheel hub and painting it red. To cross, as in decorative patterns. Shigu: Qi refers to the part of the hub that extends outward. Note: According to the Record of Trades (Kaogongji), one divides the length of the hub into three parts; two parts are on the outside and one on the inside to accommodate the spokes. Thus, the part of the hub that is on the outside is long, while the part on the inside is short. Qi is not the name of the hub itself, but rather the long, protruding part on the exterior of the hub. In general, the part within the wheel is collectively called the hub, while the part that extends from the side of the hub is called the qi.
