Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanjings): On Mount Gouwu there is a beast; it has the body of a sheep and the face of a human. Its eyes are beneath its armpits, it has the teeth of a tiger and the claws of a human, and its voice is like that of an infant. It is named paoxiao. It eats humans.
Guo commentary: It is a creature of greed. Even after it has eaten a human, it continues to harm others. Its image is on the cauldrons of the Xia dynasty. This is what the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan) calls the taotie.
Pao is pronounced pao.
