Explanations of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) explains the character mo, meaning the sun is about to set. The character is composed of sun and vegetation.
Note: Looking toward the distance on a flat plain, the sun is about to set as if it were sinking into the grass.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Wu Zixu: My sun is setting and the road ahead is still long.
Qu Yuan, Encountering Sorrow (Lisao): I only fear that the beauty will grow old.
Editorial note: Ancient classics originally all used the character mo. Nowadays, the character mu is sometimes used as a follow-up.
