According to the Analytical Dictionary of Chinese Characters (Shuowen), it means silent and still, without sound. Originally written as the character pronounced mo (variant form), now written as mo.
As mentioned in the Biography of Yang Xiong in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), he was left in silence and solitude, throwing himself from a balcony.
As mentioned in the writings of Han Yu, fishing on the banks of silence and solitude.
Also commonly written as the character pronounced mo (meaning desert or indifferent).
