In the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is recorded as mu-ye-qiè. The reading is the same as the character pronounced miè. It refers to the appearance of squinting or looking askance. Additionally, in the Western Xia language, a shaman or sorcerer is called sīmiě. This is found in the History of Liao (Liaoshi). It is also used as a surname.
