Broad Rhymes of Guangyun (Guangyun), Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun): pronounced lu.
Broad Rhymes of Guangyun (Guangyun): The name of a type of jade.
Rhyme Collection (Yunhui): The appearance of jade.
Laozi: Way and Its Power (Daodejing): Do not desire to be lu-lu like jade, or luo-luo like stone.
Commentary: Lu-lu is a metaphor for rarity; luo-luo is a metaphor for abundance. Another interpretation connects this to the preceding passage, meaning that the noble must take the humble as its foundation. Su Zhe comments: Do not be like jade, which is lu-lu (rare and precious), noble and unable to be humble; and do not be like stone, which is luo-luo (numerous and common), humble and unable to be noble.
