Pronounced lu. According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun), Collection Rhyme (Jiyun), and Correct Rhyme (Zhengyun), it shares the same pronunciation as the character lu. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is identical to the character lu (to strain). It means to wash or to filter. Sometimes it is also written in a variant form. It also refers to water being clear. As stated in the Eastern Capital Rhapsody (Dongjing fu) by Zhang Heng: The clear water flows slowly. It also refers to the name of a river in the eastern Hunan region. According to the Commentary on the Classic of Water (Shuijing zhu), the Lu River in Liquan County is also called the Lu River. It also refers to the name of a lake. As stated in the Hymns of the Suburban Sacrifices (Jiaosi ge) from the History of the Former Han (Qian Han shu): The rainwater moistens the earth, and then returns to its natural state.
