Erya: Explaining Birds (Erya): The li is the heaven dog.
Guo Pu annotation: A small bird. Blue like a kingfisher, with a red beak and a white neck. It eats fish. In the Jiangdong region, it is called the water dog. It is also known as the kingfisher slave.
Bencao: Called the fish master.
Erya Yi: Called the fish dog. Also known as the fish tiger.
Zhengzitong: Also known as the blue-green bird. It is distinct from the kingfisher.
Lu Guimeng poem: Red collars and blue wings, the two are irregular; they brush against the flowery mist as they land on thin branches. In the spring water that is slowly rising, fish are easily caught; they do not mind the wind and rain as they sit for long periods.
Cui Defu poem, Tongyang Station: In blue furs and brocade caps, we first recognize each other; the fish tiger circles and swoops by the shore. This refers to the li.
