In the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it is defined as small stones.
In the Western Capital Rhapsody (Xijing Fu) by Zhang Heng: "Glittering like gravel in the shallows." The commentary states: "Fine stones are called gravel." Red sand is also called red gravel.
In the River Rhapsody (Jiang Fu) by Guo Pu: "Below it are gold mines and red gravel."
Also refers to Huangli, a type of tree.
In the Shanglin Rhapsody (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru: "Xianzhi and Huangli." The commentary by Yan Shigu states: "Huangli is what we now use for dyeing; it is a yellow wood powder."
