According to Broad Rimes (Guangyun) and Collected Rimes (Jiyun), it is pronounced li (falling tone). One interpretation describes the sound of water flowing over a shallow rapid. From Sima Xiangru, Rhapsody on the Shanglin Park (Shanglin fu): Flowing over the shallows with a rushing sound. Also refers to approaching or arriving. From Book of Odes (Shijing): Fang Shu has arrived. Also refers to inspecting or supervising. From Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Spring Officials, Grand Invoker: Inspect the washing and purifying, and supervise the ritual libation wine. Additionally, according to Tang Rimes (Tangyun) it is pronounced li (falling tone), according to Collected Rimes (Jiyun) it is pronounced li (falling tone), and according to Correct Rimes (Zhengyun) it is pronounced li (falling tone). The meaning is the same. It is also written in a variant form (li).
