According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), the Rhyme Assembly (Yunhui), and the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is pronounced jing. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is a large deer. According to the Literary Expositor (Erya), in the section on explaining beasts, it states that the jing is a large deer, also known as the biao, which has a cow's tail and one horn. Annotation: When Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty performed the suburban sacrifices at Yong, he obtained a one-horned beast that resembled a biao; this is what was referred to as the qilin. It is commonly written in a variant form (jing).
