In the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it is the same as the character for thistle (jì). Also, in the Sea of Compilations (Pianhai), it means to cut. It is also the name of a type of tree. In the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), the jiba tree is described as having a shape like a thorny bush, with white flowers and red fruit; those who consume it do not fear the cold. It is also interchangeable with the character for mustard (jiè). In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Master Jia, it is written: A minor, nagging obstruction like a thistle (jì). The commentary notes: Jì refers to a tiny, sharp hindrance, like a fish bone stuck in the throat.
