Chen Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Tree (mù) Entry: 檕 Kangxi Stroke Count: 17 Page 557, Entry 01 Pronounced xi (falling tone). According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the wooden end of a rope used for drawing water. The Correct Meaning of Characters (Zhengzitong) states that it is a small spindle used for twisting thread, shaped like a bell-striker; hence the graph contains the radical for tree. An examination of the judgment on the Well hexagram in the Book of Changes (Yijing) states: When it has almost reached [the well], but the rope has not yet reached the well. Here, the rope refers to the well-rope used for drawing water. The entry for 檕 should be the crossbar on a shadoof (a device for raising water), used to facilitate the mechanism. The commentary in the Regional Speech (Fangyan) also states that the rope is a cord for drawing water. Interpreting it through the classical commentaries seems correct. Additionally, pronounced xi (level tone). The meaning is the same. It is also used in the term 檕梅, which is the name of a tree. See the note under the entry for 朹. Additionally, pronounced ji (level tone). 檕迷 is the name of a tree. Textual Research: Regarding the judgment on the Well hexagram in the Book of Changes, the phrase should read: When it has almost reached [the well], but the rope has not yet reached the well. The original text has been corrected to include the character missing after the phrase has almost reached.
