According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it refers to early-ripening non-glutinous rice. In the Biography of Dongfang Shuo from the History of the Former Han (Qianhan Shu), it is written: Running wild through fields of crops, rice, and non-glutinous rice. The commentary states: Rice is a general term for grain with awns. Jing refers to the non-glutinous variety. Sometimes also written in a variant form (geng). Commonly written as (geng).
