Pronounced jia. To support on the left and right. Book of Documents (Shangshu), chapter Many Regions: Why do you not assist me, the King of Zhou? Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), twenty-sixth year of Duke Xi: To assist King Cheng. Also, to draw near. Book of Documents (Shangshu), chapter Timber for Construction: To cherish and soften distant lands means to draw near. Commentary: To cherish and soften distant lands means to draw near. Also, to hold concurrently. Lu Wen, Eulogy for Di Renjie: Secretly conferring the five dragons, flying while clasping the sun. Also refers to Buddhist scripture folders. Comprehensive Mirror in Aid of Governance (Zizhitongjian): During the Tang dynasty, Emperor Yizong set up a lecture platform in the palace, personally chanted scriptures, and manually transcribed Buddhist scripture folders. Pronounced jia. Beside, or to grasp. A type of bow, see Notes to the Summer Official in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli). A bow with a body that curves outward more and inward less is called jia. Also refers to a sword named Jia. Tao Hongjing, Record of Swords and Blades: Kong Jia of the Shang dynasty collected iron from Mount Niushou to cast a sword, with the inscription Jia.
Pronounced xie. According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means clever or quick-witted.
Also a surname. Book of Han (Hanshu), Treatise on Arts and Letters: There is the Spring and Autumn Annals of the Jia family.
Also the same as narrow. Book of the Later Han (Houhanshu), Treatise on the Eastern Barbarians: Eastern Woju, its land is narrow from east to west and long from north to south.
Six Writings on Correcting Errors (Liushu Zheng’e): Composed of two people and a simplified element. Two people facing each other and supporting under the elbows, the meaning is to clasp or support.
