Pronounced ji.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): The gathering of hair. Composed of the Hair radical, with ji serving as the phonetic component. In ancient times, it was commonly written as the character for knot (jie), with this character added by later generations.
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Biography of Lu Jia: Zhao Tuo wore a topknot and sat with legs spread apart.
Commentary to the Book of Han (Hanshu): The word for knot is read as ji.
Yu Pian: Same as above.
Jiyun: Also written as the variant form (ji).
Also, Jiyun: Pronounced jie.
Zhuangzi, Chapter on Reaching Life (Dasheng): The kitchen stove has a hearth spirit (ji).
Commentary: The hearth spirit is a spirit of the stove, wearing red clothes, in the shape of a beautiful woman.
Also, Jiyun: Pronounced ji. The meaning is the same.
