Pronounced gui. According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to dry soil at a water bank. It is the same as the variant form (gui). According to the Er Ya (Erya), specifically the section on Explaining Water, water that has completely dried up is called gui. The commentary states this means the water has evaporated entirely. It also refers to a spring emerging from the side of a bank. The Er Ya, in the section on Explaining Water, notes that a gui spring emerges from a hole. Emerging from a hole means emerging sideways. Li Xun states that a spring emerging from the side of a water bank is called a gui. In the Book of Odes (Shijing), specifically the Minor Odes of the Kingdom (Xiaoya) section, it is written: There are cold gui springs; do not soak the harvested firewood.
Also pronounced qiu. Refers to a water bank. Sometimes written in a variant form.
